Day 17 Dubois, Wy to Riverton, Wy. 80 Miles with 1300 Ft of climb.

Today when  we woke up it was 36 degrees and after being cold yesterday, I decided to wear the leg warmers, arm warmers, long finger gloves, wind vest and wind jacket.  After eating breakfast we loaded luggage at 0645 and were on the road by 0655.  The starting elevation at Dubois is 6961 ft and the elevation in Riverton is 4950.  This meant that most of the day was dropping down which was quite a nice change from the climbing of the last 2 days.  We had some gentle rolling hills and this all added up to the 1300' of climbing which for this distance is really nothing.  The 1st 30 miles went along pretty fast and we were at the first rest stop of the day, and I was the 1st one to sign in for today.  We loaded up our bottles got a snack to eat and I shed my wind jacket.

I was riding with Bob and Margo and Bill and we all left heading out enjoying the perfect day with little or no wind and sunshine.  11 more miles down the road there was a roadside rest stop and we took this opportunity to use the facilities and I once again shed my wind vest as Karen who was driving one of the support vans was taking pictures of us coming up the hill into the rest stop.  On days when we only have the rolling hills I call them speed bumps and the hill coming there was at 5% for 1/2 mile.

We then left heading for the second stop of the day which was at mile 54 and it was at the Stage Stop restaurant which I took a picture of, and it has been closed for some time.  By this time the wind was starting to pickup to around 10 MPH which wasn't too bad and we had to ride into it the rest of the way into Riverton.  We got to the hotel at 12:30 and went to get something to eat, which is always top priority as you are burning calories you need to replace them.  After lunch the luggage truck was unloaded and it was time to charge up the garmin and shower.  Dinner is scheduled for 1700 today and we will see what tomorrow will bring.

We have a 120 Mile day tomorrow and although I have not ridden my bicycle on this road, I have driven it in a car many times and know what it will be like.   Everything about tomorrow will depend on which way the wind is blowing.

I will let everyone know how tomorrow goes after arriving in Casper and then we get our 2nd rest day of this ride.

  1. Well today's ride did seem a little easier than yesterday. Congratulations for being the first to sign in at the rest stop! Way to go! You are really going to get some distance in tomorrow before the 2nd rest day. Enjoyed the pictures and the write-up and look forward to reading about tomorrow's trip.
